Hello everyone, we're back!

You may be wondering why we stopped updating the blog so early on our trip. The problem was the internet connection in most places but it was already poor in Lembongan. We had a hard time uploading anything to the blog, especially the photos. Although we had our own internet connection in many places (which was still working under the hotel connection), it was too slow to upload even one picture. The frustration led us to quit updating, because the blog is quite boring without photos. But we'll try and write our travel story now, so you'll know how it all went.

On the local boat to Lembongan

First of all, we decided to do the Divemaster-course on this trip because we're travelling so long with loads of time for it. We chose to go to Lembongan island again as we liked the island and the diving there when we visited it the first time in 2012 and because we were pleased with our dive shop Lembongan Dive Center (for short LDC). We planned to do the course in two months, which is a good time for the course, and we did do the course in that time, but in two parts. More about that later.

Divemaster course material

In 2012 we took a Rocky fast boat from Sanur, Bali, which takes about 30 minutes to Lembongan. It costs more than the local boat, so this time we decided to save money and cross with the local boat. We were a bit worried about it, as they tend to overpack these boats with people, animals and food and sometimes these boats sink because of this. We had luck though as our boat only had as much tourists as there were seats and no chicken:) The trip took about an hour and cost 125,000 IDR one way. Rocky roundtrip costs 450,000, car service included. We went to our dive shop first to say hello and drop our dive gear and got a warm welcome. They still remembered us and were immediately joking around. What a great staff.

Lembongan Dive Center. Don't let its small size fool you, they're professionals and know the dive sites like their own pockets.

A few things had changed since our last visit here. Some new buildings had emerged like our Widia Homestay, and an ATM now lies in the corner of Warung 99 right on the beach. It doesn't always work, so it's still better to bring cash to the island. And many companies here like to have their payments in cash. Our homestay was nice. Because we stayed on the island long (first planned to be here two months, but our plans changed due to an accident), we got a good price and a kitchen for our use too. There was a cabin with locks in our room, air condition, fan and a bathroom. We asked for fridge too and got it. There's no swimming pool or sunbathing area, just a small garden, so for those we had to go to the beach.

Lembongan beach at the Jungut Batu village.

The Lembongan main beach is not a usual beach though. There aren't much swimmers or sunbathers, most what you see is all sorts of boats, seaweed plantations and local people picking up worms from the sand for fishing. What mostly ruins the Lembongan beach for swimming and sunbathing are the boats, they're scattered everywhere, not just in one spot. So you have to watch out for the anchor lines, the boats coming and going, etc. The surfers are further away and the daily cruise boats stay close to the surfing area too, which is called the Playgrounds. There are all kinds of water sports on offer. The sunbathers stick to the hotel areas that provide chairs etc for them. The hotels on the cliff are more expensive.

We started diving the next day from arrival. First we had to check our dive gear so they were working properly and couldn't take our cameras with us. Or could have, but decided to leave them for later. Of course we saw mantas then! Luckily our dive buddy had a camera so we got photos from her. Also saw a new nudibranch, scorpionfish, pipefish, octopus (my favourite), leaf fish, cuttlefish, flounders, thornback cowfish, etc. What a good start!

Manta, a big star of the ocean.

The Panther Grouper, Cromileptes altivelis. Also known as the Polka-Dot Grouper.

Some nudibranches found in Indonesia. Can you spot these eight?

Lembongan has good dive spots, but most dives are in currents, which isn't always fun or good for beginners. Even advanced divers sometimes have difficulties here in strong currents. The "best" drift dive - I say best, because I love good drift dives you can go along with - I heard done here lead from Mangrove point to the Mushroom Beach area, and it only took them forty minutes to dive about two kilometers! They went with the current all the way. My best drift dive so far was in Palau where we started from the middle of the ocean, went with the drift in Ulong Channel and ended up on the beach. That dive was a few kilometers too, we couldn't see our boat anymore, we were so far away. It was nice to end the dive on the beach.

We cooked our first meal with tempeh, vegetables and noodle and it cost 8 cents. Can't get a dinner that cheap from many places. We bought two large bags of groceries in China and it all cost FIVE euros! In Finland that would cost about 80.- euros. What a difference! Sometimes we ate at a local restaurant here, but tried to save money. It's cheaper to make your own dinner. One of our favourite place in Lembongan is Hero's Warung right on the beach. Another one where we like to eat a tofuburger and a milkshake is Pondok Jenggala. Other good ones are Ketut Warung, Bungalow 7, Ulu and Pondok Baruna.

A good drink in the heat.

There's this saying "Bali belly" here, and I got my first experience of that already on our first trip to Bali in 2010. We had milkshakes in Gili Trawangan before we left to Kuta. As we went for a beach walk later in Kuta I soon noticed I wasn't feeling right at all. Right after we got to the beach where people were cuddling romantically in the sunset I couldn't stop myself, but threw up right behind this romantic couple. Oops, so sorry! We rushed to the hotel and I got so sick I thought we had to go to a hospital. I kept drinking a lot of water and took a few carbon tablets. Strangely before morning I was quite ok and was able to fly, we had a flight that morning of course! This was my first experience of Bali belly and every time we've come to Bali I've been sick for a few hours, but not nearly as badly as the first time. When we travel I always bring probiotic tablets with me to keep my stomach in some balance, but they don't really work against the worst bacteria.

Hero's Warung on right.

Every island is different. In Gili Trawangan you don't find dogs but only cats, and in Lembongan it's pretty much the other way around. Also small islands tend to get rats running around in many smaller local shops. Some packages are dirty from their feces, so this also contributes to the belly problem. In many places the fruits and vegetables also lie openly around for hours for any critters and bugs to chew on them, so this is a problem too. But hand hygiene could be the number one problem for stomach issues. It is kinda hard to avoid the belly problem here, but it's usually a minor problem. The Balinese people don't like to kill animals, it brings bad karma. I'm not towards killing either, but I would do my best to keep places clean. All in all during our year travel I got six food poisonings and every one of them was in Indonesia. And it didn't matter where you ate at, it could be an expensive restaurant or street food, even a place recommended by TripAdvisor or Lonely Planet. You just have to take your chances.

Monkeys, art and J. Roberts

It wasn't a long trip to reach Ubud from the airport, took about an hour and a half. People, especially women in their forties come here to find themselves, following the footsteps of Julia Roberts after she starred in the movie Eat, Pray, Love, that was partly filmed here. We weren't here for that reason though. We wanted to spend a few days somewhere close to nature before going to Lembongan and Ubud seemed like an idyllic place.

Once you were there you could immediately see what it was all about. The streets are invaded by women and the two main streets are built around tourism, spiritual stuff and art in many forms. Many shops sell expensive brands, which was annoying. You can't escape cashing in even in a place like this. The spiritual side is well represented too. There are spas, yoga, massage, cooking and handicraft classes and while trekking you learn about the local herbs and plants and their purpose.

We stayed three nights in Ubud, in a homestay that cost 12.- euros per night. We are travelling with a low budget, so this had to do. Like before on our travels we knew exactly what we get with such money, so we don't stress about terrible places anymore, but rather make up loads of jokes about their faults. Our place was on the main street, close to the Monkey Forest and a big food market. We had a bed, closet, fan, toilet and a shower in the room. The lock on our door was merely to ease our minds, anyone could've kicked the door right in with little effort.

Our bed had seen better days, it was only a question of days and weeks when it was gonna drop the sleeping beauties off of it. The sink was leaking, and we had a bucket under it so the floor didn't flood all the time. The bucket still filled during the night and we had to carefully adjust the scoop under the leak so that we weren't kept awake by the sound of the dripping water. This thing could've been fixed in five minutes, but nobody bothered. We were supposed to have warm water too, but no. Later we actually realized, that it isn't necessary. The hot Bali weathers wear you out fast, and after you get to the hotel from your daily activities all you really need is a cold shower to make you think straight again.

On Thursday we went to the Monkey Forest.

Before entering the grounds you are warned to hide your belongings, even your sunglasses, so we did. I still had a handbag, so I kept it close to me. Some people bought bananas for the monkeys, but I didn't want any wild monkeys jumping on me, so we entered without goods.

It didn't take long, when one monkey jumped on one of the tourists for the banana and one after someone's glasses. I thought I was quite safe, but soon one monkey ran towards me and jumped on my bag and started tearing it from me. I hissed at it and stomped my feet and I guess it got scared and annoyed a bit, because it showed its large teeth at me, but then decided it was best to back off. For a moment I thought it was gonna bite me. You should have your rabies etc shots before you come here. After this we didn't see any alarming behaviour anymore, only calm monkeys being fed. It was fun to watch the monkeys trying to open some tough seeds by rolling them between the concrete and their hands and other clever behaviour. While watching the monkeys under the trees you have to be careful, because the monkeys are everywhere, and one of them was nearly above us and suddenly started peeing! Luckily nobody was under the "shower":)

The best parts in the forest (a small forest really, takes about 20 minutes to walk it through, if you don't stop to watch the monkeys) were the babies. There were a few, so they got most of our attention.

We also saw grooming, fighting, the monkey cemetery and a small temple.

The hilarious bit was this monkey though:))

The rest of the day we walked around town, caught a glimpse of school kids at their class outside. It was a strange class, they were clapping their hands in rhythm in a circle and nothing else.

Strangely there aren't much stray dogs or cats in Ubud. The money exchange course was much better here than at the airport, but airports usually aren't the best places to exchange money. Also noticed our food market was cheaper than the street vendors. Later we went for a massage close to our homestay. I asked for a strong massage, and got one. As the lady started working on the more sensitive parts below the calf she kept that killer grip. I was too lazy to tell her to loosen the grip. I grinded my teeth together and thought how much bruises is this gonna make. Then she moved to my scalp and I don't like this part in the Balinese massage at all. They start it calmly, but suddenly snap their fingers together to scare the living daylights out of you, so the whole relaxing feeling is gone. Besides this your hair looks like it was smeared with a greasy cutlet because of their oily hands.
It always puzzles me why they do the dirty feet first before moving to the scalp, but the only explanation I've come up with is that doing the scalp last is a good, relaxing finish for it. I only wish they washed their hands before smearing the scalp and face with foot sweat. It was still a good massage and only cost 80 000.- IDR, which is around seven euros.

Because we didn't come to Ubud for anything specific we relaxed on Friday and slept till twelve a.m. We were still jet lagged. In the evening we had dinner at Down To Earth -restaurant on the same street where our homestay is. This restaurant was a heaven for vegetarians, it was hard to choose dinner from all the choices. An average restaurant usually serves one course for vegetarians, so choosing the dinner is usually easy for us, you eat that one course. Now we ordered a honey-vinegarcider, a whole coconut for another drink, gingerbeer, falafel, seitan cooked in two ways, etc. It was a gourmet for us, very good, and cost about 200 000.- IDR ( 16.- euros).

The next morning we headed to Lembongan. While waiting for the car to pick us up we watched the local waste collectors do their job. It isn't easy here, they have to sort everything by hand at the scene. Their clothes must be really hot too. This system pollutes a lot, so the guys were also wearing dust masks.

Off we go!

We had an early wake-up call, already at 5.40. I only slept about half an hour, my brain was going somersaults all night about things we might've forgotten to do. My brother and his girlfriend took us to the airport and it was sad saying goodbyes, we had grown even closer to each other since our dad got sick and now we were leaving. But I comforted myself with the thought, that a year goes by really fast. And of course we'll keep in contact with each other, we've got the internet nowadays to ease our lives, remember;)

We passed all the security etc fast, and off we flew to Frankfurt, Germany, at first. There were a lot of police officers everywhere, maybe because of the bombing in Boston, USA. Kari went to buy a deodorant, and when he had paid for it we noticed it was gone from the desk. Some Turkish men had just been there eyeing things weirdly and walked away fast, so the cashier ran after them. She found one of them and the deodorant was there. The man got away with it, the cashier only nodding "oh well", which was weird. You do a crime and that's it? Lucky for Kari they didn't put the blame on him, that would've been a great start for the trip. As we were in Germany, we had to go to Burger King. It is our favourite burger places and Germans have the best BK. We're lacto-ovovegetarians, so we can only eat the veggie burger, but it is sooo delicious. Always worth the visit.

We waited four hours before our next eleven hours flight to Hongkong. It was a stupid but cheap route, as later we flew past Helsinki, 10 hours after we had left Finland. But 500.- euros from flights to Bali is a good price, one way though, and we had time. At the end of the flight we experienced a big thunderstorm with huge lightnings and had some turbulence. It can be scary sometimes, but I enjoyed the lightnings and the clouds were really sinister and huge. I like thunderstorms. Two of the greatest I've experienced were in Florida, USA, where the lightning struck a mast closeby and the whole sky was illuminated, and the other one was at the top of Nohoch Mul, Coba, Mexico. We climbed 120 steps up for a great view over the jungle and as we got there we couldn't come down in an hour, as the lightnings were all over the place. We caught one of them on tape hitting a treetop far away in the jungle, and the smoke coming after it. It was exciting.
In Hongkong we had another four hours of waiting to catch our final flight to Bali. Just when we were getting to the airplane they took our passports and said they'll do an update on them. We were wondering what that was about, but we got to the plane soon after that. Still five hours to go before we were at our first destination for the trip. I couldn't sleep at the plane, I can never sleep there or any other vehicle, but this time it was because I had a South African woman sitting next to me and she wanted to chat nearly the whole flight. It was nice to chat with her, but at this point I was really tired, having slept only about an hour in the last three days. My eyes could hardly keep open while we were talking. I hope she didn't see that, although she knew I hadn't slept well.

As we got to Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar, Bali, we changed some cash and I changed the terribly warm clothes to lighter ones. The bathroom was in bad state, so bad, that I had to struggle to not wet anything on the flooding floor. Then off we went, next stop Ubud, the city familiar from the movie and book Eat, Pray, Love. That's not why we were going there though.

Divemasterointia

No eipähän käy aika pitkäksi näillä sukelluksilla.

No, miltä nyt tuntuu...

Sitten meillä on ulkona keittiö, jota saadaan käyttää. Ollaan nyt tehty about puolet illallisista itse.

Siihen on itse asiassa monta syytä.

Matkustaminen antaa vapauden siihen.

Vuosien kuluessa matkamme veivät meitä aina vain eksoottisempiin paikkoihin, paikkoihin joissa et juurikaan tavannut suomalaista turistia. Ennen näitä matkoja kävimme kuitenkin Kreikassa, Irlannissa, Virossa, Marokossa, Euroopan kiertueella ja ympäri Suomea isäni kanssa. Nukuimme autoissa, ihmisten kodeissa, jopa hieman vaarallisissa paikoissa.

Aaltojen alta avautuu aivan toinen maailma.

Matkustustaustani lisäksi myös muut asiat vaikuttivat matkustusintooni. Isovanhempani vaikuttivat suuresti asiaan, he matkustivat maailmalla jo 60-luvulla, mutta mieleenpainuvimpia matkoja he tekivät Australiaan, Syyriaan, Amerikkaan ja Thaimaahan. Halusin seurata heidän jalanjälkiään, heidän matkansa olivat liioittelematta kiehtovia. Ilokseni löysinkin itseni myöhemmin poseeraamassa samoilla jalansijoilla kuin isovanhempani.
Isovanhempani ovat Venäjän puolen Karjalasta kotoisin, joten sodan aikana he menettivät lähes kaiken. He kasvoivat maailmaan, jossa moni asia tehtiin itse, ja he loivatkin uudesta elämästään paljon paremman ja olivat kovia tekemään töitä. Mutta eniten he rakastivat matkustamista, eikä olisi ollut ihme, jos he olisivat päätyneet Etelämantereelle aikoina, jolloin juuri ketään ei sinne mennyt. He tekivät mitä halusivat ja nauttivat elämästä.
